The botanical definition of a berry can be quite different from what we commonly think of as a berry in everyday language.

In botany, a berry is a fruit produced from the ovary of a single flower with seeds embedded in the flesh.

Here are some fruits and vegetables that meet this botanical definition of a berry.

Bananas

Surprisingly, bananas are classified as berries according to botanical definitions.

They develop from a single ovary and contain seeds, although the seeds are tiny and underdeveloped in the cultivated varieties we commonly eat.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are also botanical berries.

They develop from the ovary of a single flower and contain seeds embedded in the pulp.

Eggplants

Eggplants, like tomatoes, are botanical berries.

They develop from the ovary of a single flower and contain numerous seeds.

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers are botanical berries as well.

They develop from a single flower's ovary, and the seeds are located inside.

Chili Peppers

Chili peppers, including varieties like jalapeños and bell peppers, are also considered botanical berries because they meet the criteria of developing from a single flower's ovary with seeds inside.
