Lots of people just store all fruits together in the fridge, but it's not always the best way to keep them fresh for a long time.

Some of them contain substances that can interfere with other fruits, making them spoil faster.

Here are some fruits that should be kept separately.

Apples

Apples produce a significant amount of ethylene gas. It's better to keep them separately from other fruits, so you can prevent them from ripening and spoiling way too quickly. Apples can be stored in a cool, dry place, for instance, in the refrigerator, and it's better to use a separate container for them.

Bananas

Bananas also produce a lot of ethylene gas, which can cause other fruits to ripen and spoil faster. Keep bananas separate from other fruits, especially those that are susceptible to ethylene, such as berries, lemons, oranges. You can also store bananas at room temperature, but if you want to slow down their ripening, store them in the refrigerator.

Avocados

These fruits release the same gas as they ripen. To prevent premature ripening or spoiling of other fruits, it's best to store avocados separately. You can keep unripe avocados at room temperature until they are soft and ready to eat, and then transfer them to the fridge to slow down the process a bit. That's how you can control their speed of getting softer, and also keep other fruits fresh.
