Green onions are amazing for many dishes, but they can go off pretty quickly.

Storing green onions for a long time involves creating optimal conditions to keep them fresh and prevent wilting or spoilage.

Here's how you can do it.

Trimming and Cleaning

Before storing, trim any wilted or damaged parts of the green onions.

Remove the rubber bands or ties around the bunch, and gently rinse them under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.

Drying

After rinsing, pat the green onions dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.

Excess moisture can lead to spoilage, so it's important to ensure they are thoroughly dry.

Check and Refresh

Regardless of the storage method you choose, it's important to periodically check the green onions for any signs of spoilage or wilting.

Remove any green onions that show signs of decay to prevent them from affecting the others.

Long-Term Storage

While green onions are best enjoyed fresh, you can extend their shelf life by freezing them.

Chop the green onions into desired sizes and spread them on a baking sheet to freeze individually.

Once frozen, transfer the chopped green onions to a resealable plastic bag and store in the freezer.

While the texture might change slightly after thawing, frozen green onions can still be used in cooked dishes like soups, stews, and sauces.
